Claude share links started showing up in Google search results, Sam Altman went back to the White House, and everyone finally noticed AI consumes electricity like a mid-sized country. Two uncomfortable stories, one lesson.
Two stories this week made me uncomfortable in completely different ways, and both trace back to the same mistake: assuming invisible means private.
Anthropic had to address Claude share links surfacing in search results. People created share URLs thinking unlisted meant private. Search engines indexed them. Suddenly conversations people believed were one-on-one were readable by anyone with the right Google query.
The cloud has a memory and search engines are its autobiography.
Meanwhile Sam Altman headed back to the White House as data center growth started rattling regional grids, Alphabet disclosed enormous infrastructure commitments, and analysts kept doing math about how much power a training run actually drinks. Under every shiny model announcement there is a substation working overtime.
I think about this more than most teenagers because of the homelab. One server under my desk measurably changed my electricity bill, so I put it on a smart plug and track the draw. Scale that anxiety up to hyperscaler level and you get why CEOs are meeting governments.
Privacy and energy are the same story at different scales: invisible costs that only show up on someone's bill later.
